Wedding Music & Dancing: Father Daughter Dance Required at Wedding Reception?

Q.

My father passed away a few years ago and I don't have any brothers. I'm concerned about the father-daughter dance at my wedding. Should I ask my father in law to dance with me? It just doesn't feel right.

A.

These days, few people adhere to all the wedding traditions. It's perfectly acceptable to add or omit any event that you choose. If you don't have a grandfather, uncle or other male relative you feel close enough to share this dance with, then just skip it. Another idea is to dance with your mom, maybe to a song that was special to your father.
