Q.
Is it necessary to send out formal invitations for the rehearsal dinner or can it be done by word of mouth? We are trying to cut costs and think this may be a good way to do that.
A.
Unless your rehearsal dinner will be as big and formal as your wedding reception, you don't have to send out formal, engraved invitations. If the crowd will be small (just you two, your families, and the wedding party), you can absolutely invite everyone and give them details by word of mouth. If you're also inviting out-of-town guests, you might want to send a written invitation so you won't be bombarded with last-minute calls because people forgot where and when the party is. If you don't want to spend a lot on custom-made invites, create your own in a nice font on computer paper, or buy ready-made invites from a party store.

We sent an evite. We are having a no-frills barbeque with just family and so even written invitations seemed like too much. Plus it reduces paper.

I got simple invitations for the supermarket and handwrote them. The rehearsal is casual, but the guest should have the information written down.

I did my invites for the rehearsal and dinner on evite.com. It was less formal but allowed me to get details out to everyone with no cost. I was able to put details for the time of the rehearsal as well as the dinner and locations for some of the out-of-towners who don't need to be at the rehearsal itself. My wedding party thought it was great!

I just designed a simple slip of paper with the information on it and a leaf (part of our fall theme) and enclosed it in with the regular invitations. It went in when I was stuffing the rest of the invitations. Less time and that way it came as a package for those invited! I also added a line to the RSVP cards for those who were invited. We're having a backyard BBQ at my parents' house because his mom doesn't want to contribute unless she has absolute control....
