Q.
Is it necessary to send out formal invitations for the rehearsal dinner or can it be done by word of mouth? We are trying to cut costs and think this may be a good way to do that.
A.
Unless your rehearsal dinner will be as big and formal as your wedding reception, you don't have to send out formal, engraved invitations. If the crowd will be small (just you two, your families, and the wedding party), you can absolutely invite everyone and give them details by word of mouth. If you're also inviting out-of-town guests, you might want to send a written invitation so you won't be bombarded with last-minute calls because people forgot where and when the party is. If you don't want to spend a lot on custom-made invites, create your own in a nice font on computer paper, or buy ready-made invites from a party store.

I got mine from invitationbox.com. They have a wonderful selection and they arrived super fast.

I am not going to do them because the restaurant is literally 500 feet from the ceremony site. I would have considered doing them if a-the restaurant was far and people needed directions, the phone number etc or b-I needed to take dinner orders. Another idea I considered was placing a little note in the wedding invitations of those who are invited. I agree I saw this as a place to cut costs.

They actually have some fairly decent invites and envelopes at the Dollar Tree. You can order direct if you don't have one near you: www.dollartree.com We did that for our engagement party, and its where we bought a lot of our decor as well. We had a luau, and I was surprised at the amount of stuff they had! We decorated the entire yard with tiki torches and all - all for about $50! The other thing we do regularly, is use Evite. www.evite.com you can import your address book from your email account, or add them yourself. If it is a very informal event, and you want to save on paper and stamps, this is a great option! You can add items such as a poll, a potluck list, a dollar amount, etc. You can also see at a glance who as looked at the invite, who has said yes or no, and how many guests they'll bring. It's kind of a lifesaver.

I sent my rehearsal dinner invitations through mypunchbowl.com - really pretty invitations for absolutely every kind of atmosphere. It was very well received, we got quite a few compliments on them.
