Q&A: Child Attendants: A Flower-less Flower Girl?

Q.

I had planned to have my adorable niece be the flower girl in my wedding, but I just encountered a serious snafu with my ceremony site: They won't allow her to throw rose petals in the sanctuary! Can I still include her in the ceremony without them, or will her presence seem strange without the flowers?

A.

Cute kids are a ceremony necessity for most brides! Even though she won't be able to fill your path with petals, there's no reason your niece can't still be part of your processional. Rather than having her toss flowers, simply give her another task. She could carry your unity candle, a basket holding the glass (if you're having a Jewish ceremony), or a pretty pomander. And hey, if you weren't going to have a ring bearer, now you've got one -- there's no reason a girl can't walk your wedding bands down the aisle.

I love the idea of a small bouquet and wish I had thought of it for my flower girl. She threw petals but when it was time for pictures, she was jealous that all the "big girls" (bridesmaids) had flowers and she didn't! Thankkfully her mom (one of the bridesmaids) lent her bouquet to her daughter. Now my own daughter will be a flower girl next year and I can't wait to see what the bride picks for her and what she does on the big day!

In my aunt's wedding my sister was the flower girl and she carried a white satin basket with a small bouquet in it down the aisle. It looked very nice and there wasn't a big mess to clean up either!

For my cousin's wedding, their flower girl carried a small bouquet down the aisle, since their ceremony site wouldn't permit thrown petals. It was perfect for her, since she is actually very shy and could just hurry down the aisle to her mom instead of having to walk slow to scatter the petals!

My church has the same problem but I am having the flower girls hand the first person in each pew a rose. They might not get every person but at least the path to the aisle will still have some flowers even if they are not on the ground.
