Q.
My fiance and I were planning on having a wedding party that's family-only (my sisters would be my bridesmaids, his brother and a cousin would be his groomsmen). I was worried, however, that my best friend would be upset at not being a bridesmaid. It turned out that she wasn't unhappy at all -- she said she'd rather be a flower girl. Can I have a flower girl who's my own age?

If she hadn't suggested it herself, this definitely wouldn't be the way to go (in any other situation, a grown woman would likely take offense to being handed a role normally reserved for a five-year-old). However, since she wants to do it, if you're okay with it there's no reason she can't participate in your wedding in this way. Just one caveat, though -- while she may still toss flower petals, you probably shouldn't ask her to wear the type of frilly, floor-length get-up a child attendant would wear. Instead, try a white or light-colored dress in a similar style to your bridesmaids' with a sash in the color of their dresses for a more grown-up look.

I have a couple of friends who have been jokingly asking to be my flower girl since I got engaged. I am planning on having them be some sort of adult flower girls of some sort along with my 6-year-old flower girl. I haven't quite thought it all through yet as far as what they will do, but what do you call an adult flower girl? Flower woman just sounds silly!

Why would a grown woman want to be a flower girl? I can't even imagine. But hey, since she requested the role and you're okay with it, go ahead. Who cares what others think?

Actually, between my fiance and I, we only have 1 surviving set of grandparents, so we've asked them to be our ring bearer and flower girl. I'm not sure why this would be demeaning. We're trusting Grandpa w/ our wedding rings -- THE most important part of the day. Why give those to a 5 year old instead? Also, I think it's a nice and non-traditional way to honor them and make them part of the wedding party.

i saw a wedding on offbeatbride where the groom's (male) friend was the "flowergirl". made for some really cute pics of him tossing petals. it's your wedding you can do whatever you want, there are no rules.
