Lauren & Scott: A Wild Wedding Reception at the St. Louis Zoo

The timing couldn't have been more perfect. Exactly two years earlier on New Year's Eve, Scott Hobart and Lauren Roach shared their first kiss at the stroke of midnight. But the turn of the century brought even more excitement than the anniversary of that first kiss. With fireworks in the sky and the St. Louis arch in the background, Scott asked Lauren to be his wife. "Scott and I cried, my sister cried, and her boyfriend took a roll of pictures of the whole thing," says Lauren.

THE SCENE A personal, Catholic ceremony followed by a fun, family-oriented reception at the St. Louis Zoo.

The late-morning Catholic wedding took place after 16 months of planning by both the bride and groom. Family members played important roles in the ceremony, with aunts and an uncle sharing special readings and a cousin sharing her talent as the soloist.

"After Scott said his vows, a tear slowly rolled down his cheek that I wiped away," says Lauren. "If I had to pick one moment to never forget, it would be that moment." After the ceremony, guests were handed personalized kazoos and party horns to blow as the bride and groom made their exit.

A few hours lapsed between the ceremony and the reception, so the couple spent that time having photos taken and enjoying an open house for the family at the home of the groom's parents. When it was time for the reception, the newlyweds and their bridal party headed off on a trolley bus to their reception at the Saint Louis Zoo.

The festivities began with a cocktail hour beneath large replicas of sharks and squid. After cutting the cake at the end of the cocktail hour, the guests moved to their tables for dinner. "Each table had a different zoo animal theme and on our guests' place cards was the name of an animal, instead of a number," says Lauren.

Guests were also given two personalized CDs that contained songs dedicated to the couple's parents and members of the wedding party along with songs from the wedding. "Inside the CD covers, we printed messages to our friends and family members about the songs we chose for them," says Lauren. "It was our way of letting everyone close to us know how much we love and care for them."

An evening of dinner and dancing gave way to another memorable moment for Lauren. "The bouquet toss ended with my sister Kim, the maid of honor, on the floor and my cousin Erin jumping up and down with the bouquet, says Lauren. "Everyone was laughing so hard!"
