Christy & Mark: Spanish Style at a Washington, DC Wedding

Christy Hernandez and Mark Koenig's Spanish-theme wedding day was influenced by their heritages: Christy is part Mexican, and Mark is part Dominican. While threading spring colors such as light and dark blue with touches of violet throughout the wedding-day details, Christy and Mark were sure to turn their spring soiree into a formal and fun fiesta.

RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY They wed at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church at 3 p.m. with a full Mass. Guests were seated at pews decorated with hydrangea spilling out of small galvanized buckets. Christy wore a silk organza strapless gown; her bridesmaids wore full-length black gowns of their choosing. Two hours later, a reception began at the Washington Golf & Country Club. "The cocktail hour was supposed to be on a beautiful terrace overlooking the National Cathedral and the 18th green of the golf course, with white lights along all of the railings, but it rained almost every single day in May-including our wedding day," says Christy. "We moved into a room that had floor-to-ceiling windows with the same view, only it was warm and dry!"

CUTE COCKTAILS To enhance the Spanish flair, mojitos were passed around as a signature drink. Christy printed up the recipe on a card and framed it at the bar. She remembers, "The country club had many, many mojitos waiting for our guests as they arrived at the cocktail hour and they turned out to be a huge hit!" Dinner took place in the Grand Ballroom of the club. One groomsmen-a former teammate on Mark's college baseball team-recited funny baseball stories about Mark and his one-and-only home run, but then added that the groom had hit another home run when he found Christy.

TIME FOR FIESTA A huge crystal chandelier hung in the middle of the ballroom. Beneath that sparkly chandelier, lots of energetic dancing took place to the sounds of a salsa and merengue band (which alternated every half hour with a DJ who provided more traditional music). As a tribute to her mother, who passed away during the wedding-planning process, Christy handcrafted cards for each guest that read, "In lieu of favors, a donation has been made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, in loving memory of the mother of the bride, Jeanne Hernandez."
