Kathryn & Trey: Vivid Color Infuses an Afternoon Affair

At one point in the middle of their traditional ceremony at the picturesque Village Chapel in Pinehurst, Kathryn Knox, a sales rep, and James Conley Mitchell III a.k.a. “Trey”, an aspiring pro golfer, knelt at the altar. If you were up close, and inspecting the soles of the groom’s shoes, you’d see that they’d been tampered with. The groomsmen had gotten hold of the shoes: they’d put masking tape across the bottoms, and with a black marker wrote “HELP” on one sole, and “ME”, on the other. “We didn’t know it until after the ceremony,” laughs the good-natured bride. “The videographer picked it up in the video, it’s great!”

THE SCENE An intimate ceremony and reception in Pinehurst

FROM A HOPELESS CRUSH TO HAPPILY EVER AFTER In 1990, both Kathryn and Trey were students at Ragsdale High School in Jamestown. Trey had a huge crush on Kathryn, who was two years ahead of him and therefore untouchable. Naturally she had no idea. “Apparently, one day he came home from school with a huge smile on his face and told his mother that the prettiest girl in school had smiled at him,” says the bride. “Of course I don’t recall that moment of love at first sight.” Fast forward to 1997: After college, both were back in town, and ran into each other at a local hang out. “This time, I noticed him, wondering who that hot guy was,” Kathryn says. After dating for three years, Kathryn rushed home from the gym one night, about to jump in the shower to get ready for a party she and Trey planned to attend later. Trey stopped her, saying he’d picked her up something for the party—a gorgeous engagement ring. “Boy was I surprised,” admits Kathryn.

DESTINATION: CLOSE TO HOME “We wanted a small, personal wedding that really celebrated our marriage and the joining of our families,” she says. They’d considered a destination wedding in the Caribbean, but worried that some friends and family might not be able to get there. “We finally decided on Pinehurst,” says Kathryn, whose parents live there now. “It’s still away from home, yet only an hour and a half’s journey for most everyone.” Pinehurst, an über-scenic golf mecca about an hour’s drive from Raleigh, is equipped for all kinds of wedding weekend fun. Instead of favors, Kathryn and Trey welcomed out-of-towners with thoughtfully compiled gift “baskets”—these were clay pots tied with gingham ribbon and filled chocolates, snack mix, bottled water, and packets of forget-me-not seeds.

VIVID COLOR, VIBRANT SUNSHINE It was nearing 12:30 p.m. by the time everyone had found their way to the National Golf Club for the reception, happily sipping bloody Marys or mimosas. “Upon arrival, all my worries dissipated,” enthuses Kathryn. “It was the most beautiful sight.” Their careful, creative planning produced a clean, crisp decor accented with vibrant color. Sunlight streamed through the glass walls of the ballroom; outside, the verdant golf course appeared to gleam in the distance. Tables and chairs were covered in festive white linens, while the centerpieces featured white calla lilies in tall glass vases or hot pink and red roses and tulips floated in bowls. “I had worried about red and hot pink together because March is in between seasons,” says the bride. “I felt that alone, red was too rich and wintry and hot pink too springy. But I was very pleased. I can still see it now and it makes me smile.” After performing the requisite first dance (“That was the longest song of my life,” laughs Kathryn), the newlyweds worked the crowd. With classic jazz standards playing the background, some guests stood watching golfers from the deck, or else sat enjoying the luncheon (the chicken in a creamy mushroom sauce and sun-dried tomato pesto cream pasta were favorites). “I wished the day would last forever,” remembers the bride. “All the time, patience, planning, and stress were definitely worth it.”

A SHOWER OF PETALS Later in the afternoon, before Kathryn could even catch her breath, Trey had already been spotted sans morning suit, a signal that it would soon be time to leave the party. “It was over before I was ready,” admits the bride. So Kathryn left to trade her Vera Wang wedding gown for a more comfortable going-away outfit—this too, was a brilliant shade of hot pink. Not long after, Kathryn and Trey fled the scene into a deluge of hydrangea petals and made a beeline for the groom’s mother’s jeep. “It had been decorated to the hilt,” says Kathryn, naming white shoe polish, curly ribbons, and other cheeky objects among the adornments. “We cracked up the whole way home.”
