Hedy Lynn & John: A Romantic Fall Affair in Greenbelt

"I always dreamed my wedding day would be like a fairy tale, but after the events of September 11, I was afraid that my dream wedding wouldn't come true," says Hedy Lynn. "Although many were afraid to fly, my family and friends came through. I had guests that drove in from Texas, Michigan, Colorado, and California. The day was absolutely perfect. It was everything that I had dreamed of and more."

THE DATE September 28
THE SCENE The ceremony was held at Saint Columbia Catholic Church in Oxon Hill; the celebration unfolded at Martin's Crosswinds in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Originally from Fort Washington, Hedy Lynn grew up in the same town as John, but the two never crossed paths until a January 2000 Redskins playoff game in Tampa, Florida.

"John and I just hit it off really well. We became pretty good friends after that day and started dating a couple of months later."

They were married in early autumn, at Saint Columba Catholic Church in Oxon Hill just as the sun was setting.

"The photographers came to my mother's house two hours before the ceremony, before the sun went down, to take pictures in her garden," says Hedy Lynn. "Her backyard looked like a park. She'd been working on this garden for a year, ever since John and I got engaged. There were beautiful, colorful flowers beds, park benches, and even light posts."

Following the full Catholic Mass, a huge celebration unfolded at Martin's Crosswinds where red and white flowers covered every tabletop and gave the magnificent space a more intimate feel.

Once the newlyweds had enjoyed their first moments as husband and wife on the dance floor swaying to Frank Sinatra's "Strangers in the Night," 400 guests crowded the marble floor and danced all night under the glorious chandeliers.

Appropriately, favors consisted of hugs, kisses, and promises. Hershey's Hugs & Kisses and Dove Promises were placed in baskets and tied with tags that read, "With a promise, a hug, and some kisses, Hedy Lynn and John become Mr. and Mrs."

As the band was packing up, Hedy Lynn took a moment to reflect on the peaceful day. "I remember thinking I was sad that the day was over, but so happy that it was such a success."
