Marriage Proposals: Celebrity Proposal Stories

Find out how famous couples got engaged.

Their rings may be bigger and their weddings more high-profile, but for these celebrities, what kicked it all off was the proposal -- a private moment for two. Well, except for Tom and Katie, of course. While you may not have the resources to have an igloo specially made like Seal did for Heidi Klum, you can certainly take a cue from his and other celebs' proposal styles. Here's how the stars got engaged and how to pull off your own celeb-inspired wedding proposal.

Giuliana DePandi & Bill Rancic

Wow factor: A helicopter ride over Chicago
The proposal: The Apprentice winner Bill Rancic's proposal to E! News anchor Giuliana DePandi took the couple to new heights. A limo met DePandi at the Chicago airport and whisked her off to a nearby helipad where Rancic was waiting, holding her favorite pizza and a bottle of champagne. He waited until they were flying over downtown Chicago, with all the holiday lights on display, to propose.
Steal this idea: Take her on a high-speed adventure, like a helicopter, ferry, or train ride to another city.

Christina Aguilera & Jordan Bratman

Wow factor: A preamble of multiple gifts before the ring
The proposal: While on vacation in Carmel, CA, music executive Jordan Bratman proposed to pop singer Christina Aguilera in a hotel room filled with rose petals and gift boxes, each with a present and a self-penned poem. After she opened the last box (which contained a five-carat ring), Bratman got down on one knee and asked her to be his wife.
Steal this idea: Give her a handwritten love letter to express your feelings before asking the big question.

Jenna Bush & Henry Hager

Wow factor: A mountaintop proposal at sunrise
The proposal: After getting the go-ahead from the President himself, former White House aide Henry Hager took first daughter Jenna Bush on vacation. Hager woke Jenna up at 4 a.m. to go on a morning hike on Maine's Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park. Once they reached the peak of the mountain, he asked her to be his wife just as the sun was rising.
Steal this idea: Look to the outdoors for the perfect proposal spot, from skiing the slopes to snorkeling in the sea.

Tracy Warbin & Noah Wyle

Wow factor: A scavenger hunt
The proposal: Resident ER doc Noah Wyle proposed to his real-life love, makeup artist Tracy Warbin, on Valentine's Day. Having been originally opposed to the idea of a February 14 engagement for fear of a corny proposal, Warbin was shocked when a scavenger hunt led to a romantic hillside picnic where Wyle popped the question.
Steal this idea: Choose a time that she'll least expect it, whether it's standing in line at the movies or snuggling on the couch at home.

Rebecca Romijn & Jerry O'Connell

Wow factor: A proposal at a childhood home
The proposal: In lieu of a grand public proposal, actor Jerry O'Connell and actress Rebecca Romijn got engaged in a personal place. While visiting New York, O'Connell took Romijn on a tour of the apartment where he spent his childhood and then asked for her hand in marriage.
Steal this idea: Choose a place that holds special meaning to the two of you, like the place you had your first kiss or where you first met.

Jamie King & Kyle Newman

Wow factor: A spontaneous proposal in the park
The proposal: Film director Kyle Newman and actress Jamie King had spent a significant amount of time choosing the perfect engagement ring and expected the ring to be delivered the day before leaving on a romantic vacation. Unfortunately, they missed the delivery and went chasing after several FedEx trucks throughout their town. When the ring finally arrived, Newman proposed while they were walking in a Beverly Hills park.
Steal this idea: If the engagement doesn't go as planned, propose on a whim -- unscripted proposals can be just as perfect.

Tiffany Thiessen & Brady Smith

Wow factor: A homemade, hand-illustrated book proposal
The proposal: In honor of their relationship, actor and artist Brady Smith presented actress Tiffany Thiessen with a hand-illustrated book chronicling their time together. After giving the gift at their San Fernando Valley home, he proposed and she tearfully accepted.
Steal this idea: Whether it's singing, acting, cooking, or drawing, take the time to create something for her and incorporate it into the proposal in a thoughtful way.

Brooke Mueller & Charlie Sheen

Wow factor: Romantic vacation to Costa Rica
The proposal: Actor Charlie Sheen and real estate investor Brooke Mueller headed down to Costa Rica for a little R&R. While there Sheen presented Mueller with a Patek Philippe Calatrava watch from Robert Maron, Inc. engraved with B -- Wanna Get Married?...Love C. He surprised her further with an 11-carat, natural yellow diamond set in platinum.
Steal this idea: Engrave a keepsake with the proposal and let it do the talking.

Heidi Klum & Seal

Wow factor: A specially built igloo for the proposal
The proposal: The day before Christmas Eve, Grammy-winning singer Seal and supermodel Heidi Klum flew by helicopter to the top of a glacier in Whistler, B.C. At 14,000 feet above ground level, Seal proposed to Klum in an igloo specially built for the occasion.
Steal this idea: Find a place that will make you feel like the only two on the planet -- whether it's at the top of a mountain or on a deserted beach -- for the ultimate private proposal.

Katie Holmes & Tom Cruise

Wow factor: Eiffel Tower proposal
The proposal: Following a whirlwind romance of couch-jumping and red-carpet kisses, Tom Cruise took Katie Holmes to one of the most romantic cities in the world -- Paris. While in town promoting his new flick, Cruise asked for Holmes' hand in marriage at the Eiffel Tower.
Steal this idea: Plan a storybook proposal at one of the quintessentially romantic places in the world -- think a Venice gondola or the top of the Empire State Building.
